Thanks for the reply. I tried to double-click open a file in a backup and it got associated with Infranview. W10 offered to let me associate it with the PSE editor. Then it did the association in every backup thruout the system, But, still trying to understand it. All my originals are jpg. In PSE organizer they appear as jpg. But in my backups, I have a mix of .xmp and jpg-- Is it the case that files that I edit in PSE get backed up by PSE as xmp and unedited files stay jpg?? That would explain it...I never noticed before but all my different cat backups do have a mix. If so, I would feel stupid...but happy to understand it. And yes the file associations would not matter.

I have backups from PSE12.
I some how thought I could just open an .xmp file by clicking on it. Nope. Tried to open it in Infranwiew...nope.
But some, not all files got the red Infranview badge on the left end.
And to my surprise it changed files on all my backups, all disks.
How do I get the backups back to normal?
Want all files to have the :correct" associations.
Sorry it this is confusing, but .... so am I.

OK, thanks, I think I can work with that. I worry about losing all that work. Two things really confused me-- after I copied the folder with my catalogs (several) to the ext drive for security, 1. I have 2 of each catalog with the same names in different places that open with different pics, and 2. pse somehow decided to switch to the ones on the external drive. My pse12 catalogs were, and still are listed under C:> App data>roaming>org..... where they have been for a long time. At some point I followed some advice to make a copy of my catalog folder and I put it on an ext drive. Now it appears that pse12 is using the catalogs on that ext drive. The same (named) cat folders are still listed on C but I'm not sure if they are up do date....I assume not. I have made several adds and deletes since the copy. How do I get my cataogs back to the C:drive? app data is fine, AND how do I be sure the cat I am using is the latest with the adds I made since the move? Any idea how this happened? I did a copy, not a move. Really appreciate your help Dick Nixon

Thanks! I hope you are right....I could not see any obviously missing tags, but computer speed on 10,000 files.... I will look for your answer. As I mentioned, it was only one 1 catalog, the one I have had a lot of duplicates and subsequent deletions on. Have a good weekend.

Been having catalog issues. Thought I had it fixed. In PSE12, I go to find menu, find by history, imported on ... pse immediately shows a list of import groups AND starts a box with a completion thermometer, box is titled 'deleting keyword tags" and it is running! It did not ask if I wanted to start a deletion. I quickly go to cancel and the delete box goes away. I can see the import groups. QUESTION--did I do any damage to the catalog while that delete box was running? I don't see any obvious issues, but.... What was it trying to do? Only one catalog, the one I have been having trouble with, shows the delete box. The rest just show the import groups. Do not see this in the help files, FAQs, etc. Any help appreciated.

Thanks. Got me started. I don't know what happened, but pretty sure I caused the problem. A lot of pics got duplicated on my computer and then picked up by the catalog. Two major screwups........no idea why. But I seem to recovered....at last. Thanks for the help.

I hope someone may have seen this before, or understands it. I've not seen in before in any version of PSE. I open a catalog in PSE12 (that worked before) and put up the folder view on the side. ALMOST all, but not all, the folder names are shown twice. One over the other, same spelling. If I click on the folder names to view folder contents in the main page, the photos that are supposed to be in 1 folder are split between the 2 folders with identical names. In win explorer, everything looks ok...one folder with all the expected pics. In the PSE grid, the photos display ok. INFO shows them in a folder w/ the same name but of course I can't see which folder is which. Other catalogs in PSE12 do not have the problem! Tried repair, optimize, restart, ..... no joy.

Thank you. As I hoped but I am paranoid about my data. I want to convert the catalog to PSE2018 and then do some major cleanup and reduction on the catalog. But it I screw up, I want to be able to start over...or go back and get what I had. (An other way is probably to convert, do a backup saved securely, and then go at the catalog. This may be obvious, but I've made big mistakes before.... I have PSE12 and some catalogs. Say I do a Backup of a cat in PSE12 and save it. I then convert the PSE12 catalog to PSE2018 and make deletions, edits, etc. Can I later run PSE12, restore the catalog backed up in PSE12, and be back where I left off in PSE12?? All the photos I had before the PSE2018 conversion and deletions? Just, perhaps, a lot of duplicates on the disc?
