I've got a reverb on the effects rack of track 1, and I want to be able to ramp the reverb gain using an envelope. I can't find any way to do this, other than duplicate the track so I have one with reverb and one without, and mix between the two. Surely there's a more elegant way? I've experimented with all the Rack envelopes, and none do what I need. The one that comes closest is Rack Power, but that's basically a hard on/off control for rack effects, so it won't allow for gradually ramping the reverb gain up and down. For absolute clarity, I need to be able to make the track ramp from dry to wet and back again at various point defined by keyframes on an envelope. Ideally I want the envelope to be *only* affecting the gain of the reverb, *not* the gain of the dry source track. What's the best way to achieve what I want? On an analogue mixing desk (yes, I'm that old) I'd do it either by turning the reverb send level up and down, or using a pre-fader send to the reverb unit and bringing up the reverb return on its own fader.

Fixed it - I needed to re-import the v3.aep to Premiere and drop it onto the timeline in place of the previous one. Now it all works normally.

I'm working on a Premiere project that I started in 24.x and because Media Encoder was updated to 25.1, the dynamic linking broke and I had to update Premiere as well, and then AE. So now everything's on 25.1, and so every time I go back and use Edit Original in Premiere to open the AE composition, once AE has opened it asks me to save the AE project. It then forgets that it's saved that project, so it keeps opening the original converted one. As an example, I've just opened the project "Project (converted).aep" using Edit Original and because it demanded I save it, I saved it to "Project (converted) v3.aep". If I now close AE, when I reopen the project it will reopen "Project (converted).aep" and not "Project (converted) v3.aep" - and ask me to save it. I've tried resetting AE's preferences, and it hasn't fixed it. Any ideas?

Thankyou! In my case, I'm actually animating the anchor point of a precomp so I can't open it in the Layer panel, but I've been able to work around that by creating a null, parenting the anchor point of the null to that of the precomp, and then animating the null and opening *that* in the Layer panel.

I'm doing an animation involving moving from panel to panel in a comic strip, replacing the comic panels with video. The master comp is 1920x1080 (which will be the size of the final output) and I've got a 4000x2960 precomp nested within it which holds the actual comic page. I'm using the SureTarget plugin for camera control, which uses the anchor point of the target layer to detemine where the camera goes. I'm animating the anchor point of the precomp to get the camera to move from panel to panel. I'd like to be able to play with the Bezier handles of the motion path so that some of the camera moves follow a U-shaped path rather than a straight line (such as when the camera moves from the rightmost panel on a line to the leftmost on the line below), but I can't seem to find any way to make the motion path visible for the anchor point parameter. Any suggestions? I've definitely got motion paths switched on in the View Options. (AfterEffects 24.6.4, MacOS)

I came back to my current PPro project after only a couple of hours, and suddenly it wouldn't open. If tried to open it, I got the following dialogue box: Thing is, I don't use Beta. It's not installed on my machine. I noted that the .prproj file for my project, and all the incremental files in the auto-save folder, just had the "blank document" icon, showing that they weren't associated with any installed app at the moment. I right-clicked on the project and chose "Open with", and boom, for some unknown reason Premiere Pro Beta, which just to reiterate is not installed, was listed as the default app to open it with. I chose Premiere Pro and it opened normally. Any reason why it would have done this? This is on macOS 13.6.6, PPro 24.3.0.

And I've just confirmed that clicking the Mark In button at the bottom of the Source window also does not work either for the merged clip until the project has been closed and re-opened.

I have E and R mapped to Mark In and Mark Out. For some reason, if I use the Merge Clips command to merge a video clip with its associated separate audio clip, the Mark In shortcut (and only Mark In) stops working, but only in the Source window, and only for the merged clip - it works normally for all other clips in the Source window, and works normally for all clips in the Program window. The fix is to close the project and reopen, after which the Mark In shortcut will be working normally again for the merged clip. If I then create another merged clip, the same thing happens - Mark In (only) stops working - but it will continue work normally for the previously-merged clip. This is a completely repeatable, it happens every time I merge a clip. It's actually a longstanding bug that I've experienced in previous versions as well, but never reported before now. An unuseable update for me, as when you try and play any video, you just see black. You can see the video normally while you're scrubbing through it, adjusting parameters etc, but when you try and play it, you just see the layer guides moving on a black background. I'm rolling back to a previous version.

AE has self-updated to 24.2.1 and now when I try to play any video with the space bar, the video disappears and I can only see the layer guides moving on black. I can see the video completely normally when I'm scrubbing through and adjusting parameters etc, but when try to play it, I get the black screen. This happens with both new projects created in 24.2.1 and previous ones. I've purged the caches, tried every display option I can find, nothing works. Can I roll back to the previous version? I'm on a 2019 MacBook Pro with macOS 13.6.3.

I think I can work out that your script only runs the overshoot code if the value returned by the checkbox is greater than 0, but I want to understand it properly - can you recommend any resources for beginners?

I've animated a layer with multiple position keyframes, and now I want some of those keyframes - but not all of them - to have an overshoot expression applied. In other words, I want an expression to only affect certain specific keyframes on a layer. I've been told that it's possible to do this using a checkbox control and keyframe the expression on or off as necessary. Unfortunately, I have no coding experience and I can't work out how to link an expression to a checkbox such that the checkbox can be used to enable or disable that expression. I've done that, but it still doesn't work as advertised - it doesn't create the camera and then parent it to the null. I've done that manually, and even then it doesn't necessarily work; you can move the null around but while you can see the wireframe of the camera moving, the actual video in the composition window doesn't move with it. If you click Refresh Expressions then it might start working, but I'm worried that it might suddenly stop working mid-project and refuse to respond to any of the fixes (like Refresh Expressions or close/reopen the project).

Say I've got various precomps in differing positions, depths and rotations in 3D space, and I want the camera to fly from one to the other, automatically rotating itself as necessary so that when it lands, the comp is perfectly framed square-on. What's the correct workflow to do that? I used to use VideoCopilot's excellent "Sure Target" plugin, that let you assign up to 99 layers as camera targets and animate the movement between them very easily, but that was broken a while back by AE updates and it looks like VC aren't going to fix it. There doesn't seem to be any kind of equivalent camera control plugin out there either.

I'm using a shape layer as a track matte, and to create a black border I've duplicated the shape, switched off the fill and turned on the stroke. I want to create a sort of "comic book panel" effect, so I'd like the border to look more like a hand-drawn pencil texture than a uniform solid line. Is it possible to change the brush style for the stroke on a shape layer? I've obviously looked but I can't see anything in the stroke parameters for that. I can kinda-sorta get what I want with use of the Roughen Edges effect and/or with the Wave parameter, but is there any way to actually change the brush style for a stroke?

It opens an older version of the AE project. I've managed to fix it by setting the dynamic link offline and then relinking it to the current version of the project. I don't know if that's the right way to do it, but it works 🙂

Months ago I started a project in Premiere and sent the video to AE via dynamic link. I then lost interest in it for a while. Since coming back to it, the link between the Premiere project and the AE project has broken, so that any work I do in the AE project does not update in the Premiere timeline any more. There have been several new versions of both Prem and AE in that time, and I'm on the latest versions of both. Is there anything I can do to re-establish the dynamic link between the AE project and the Prem project?

I've since discovered that the problem was with Adobe's cloud servers, and I just had to wait until a time when they were under a lighter load. Thing is, the error message that Photoshop gives in that situation is basically worse than useless, as it doesn't make clear that it's an issue at Adobe's end and there's nothing wrong with your local system. I'm sure it's led to an awful lot of unnecessary help requests with people thinking that there was a problem with their computer or software installation.

I've tried using Smart Portrait for the first time, to change an expression in a photo to a smile. It starts to process in the cloud, then when the blue bar shows about 50% complete I get the "temporarily disabled due to an error" message. I've searched the issue and tried turning off the GPU in Preferences, but that's made no difference. Photoshop 24.7.0 (showing as "up to date" in CC), macOS 13.4 on a 2019 MacBook Pro 16GB.

Many thanks for that, Mike! That works to randomly colour the dots when using the ellipse tool in Path mode and using the Random Colour Dots brush to stroke the path, but the drawback for that technique is that you can't make any adjustments to the dot spacing once you've done it, which means you can end up with overlapping dots at the path's start/end point, with no way to adjust them: Unless I'm missing something here, the only way to draw a circle of dots and retain the control necessary to tweak their spacing is to use the drawing tools in Shape mode and then change the stroke type to dotted line - but you lose the ability to use brushes. You can apply a colour gradient, but I need each dot to be an individual solid colour. Looks like I'm going to need to build the dotted circles in Apple Motion (where it literally takes seconds to build any shape comprised of any number of dots all with their own individual solid colour randomly picked from a palette you define and with fine controls for adjusting dot spacing and size) and then export them as stills. A shame, as it means I lose interactive control over the circles in Photoshop, but it gets the job done.

My work-supplied MacBook Pro recently had to have a system drive rebuild, so I ended up with High Sierra on it rather than El Capitan. Now, I can no longer import MPEG2 MKVs to Premiere Pro (CC 2017). I used to be able to do it, but now I get a "file format not supported" message. Is this because I'm now on High Sierra? Is there any way to work with MPEG2 MKVs natively, or do I have to transcode first? Even Media Encoder refuses to import the files, so I'm having to transcode using iFFMPEG.

I've just done a screen replacement on a shot that starts as a CU on the screen, then pulls back rapidly over 12 frames to a wide. Everything's fine until I turn on motion blur. Then the replacement screen image shrinks significantly, revealing the outer part of the original screen image (I can't post any example images as my employer wouldn't appreciate it). Am I missing a setting somewhere, or do I just need to resize the replacement image as necessary during the pull-back? I'm using AE CC 2017.2.

Thankyou! I'm surprised at the lack of flexibility with masks, but then I'm using a 2015 version of AE that bizarrely doesn't allow changing keyboard shortcuts without manually finding and editing a prefs file, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised
