hi guys, i'm trying to find a way (something automated not manual cleaning) of path lines that are hidden behind other objects with fill color. I've attached a simple example of what i'm referring to. shape A has a single path (no fill) behind a rectangular box with white fill. Pic B shows the actual paths with no fill color. Now I wish to remove part of the vertical line that is behind the box. So basically pic A should look the same when viewing the outline/paths (with CTRL+Y) I have tried all pathfinder options and non of them did the job. The only way I know of is to use the shapebuilder tool and manually drag and merge the internal of the box. It works for this example, but I need it for far more complex artwork that need to be cut on laser/sticker cutters so the shape builder wont help me in this case. I also tried selecting all filled objects, moving them on top and use minus front but unfortunately open paths will get deleted completely. Minus front between 2 closed objects has the behaviour that i'm looking for, but as stated, not working with open paths. any help much appreciated. I'm open also to 3rd party plugins/software, though i would prefer doing it natively

hi there, as per title request I'm trying to find a way how to get the same (or similar) results of cutout filter but without the angular pointed edges. What i'm after is same effect but rounded corners. Is there an alternative method/filter or even app if needed to achieve such result? so far i've tried combination of filters but haven't come across anything interesting. the closest I got was by doing the cutout effect then apply noise > median, but the result loses all of its sharpness and it's not what i'm looking for (however it did somehow make the edges rounder...ish). Important that each "cutout" remains solid, no feathering or gradient or anything. thanks in advance L

thanks for the reply, to be honest I need to print it out and follow through with it since i have zero technical knowledge on scripting/programming and i'm not quite sure i'm grasping whats going on. I've read it a couple of times but i'm still lost, maybe following and trying it out myself on AI will clear things out for me, but really appriciate the time you took in putting so much help 🙂 Will let you know if i'll manage (or not!)

thanks for the input, unfortunately the scripts are all done for the company i work with so I can't really share them (hope they dont see this post since automating my workflow might be interpreted as slacking for some rather than working more efficient) Anyways i'll try searching for the variable string and see whats possible to change but its not one of those straight forwarding scripts since there are combination of variables to choose from in the popups. meanwhile thanks again and will let you know how it turns out.

hi guys ive compiled a set of actions to batch process some of my artworks, however one of the steps in doing so is by using a script. In the actions panel I am able to load the script via the action's "insert menu" option, however the script itself has a popup to input some variables. Since I'm working with practically the same variables on all the artworks, is it possible to include such script without having to wait for my input? cause doing so will nullify the scope of all this. Thanks in advance Lee

hi there, sorry for my delay in replying, got held with work. I've tried your script and it does seperate them in different layers, but as noted by the other user is eliminates compound paths. In my case I dont think it would be a big deal since I might be restacking the items individually, so i think its still a huge help to have the first big step done automatically. Not sure if ur still interested in knowing my workflow or not by now, if so let me know and I can provide you with some shots (sometimes i take a while to reply depends on my work schedule) thanks again

sorry for delay in replying, so much input from you all i'm flattered 🙂 thanks! i'm gonna read all replies and check the script, and will also give an example of my workload/flow to have an idea what I meant and what I was looking for. Will get back to you all later today since i'm currently at work. thanks once again for now and will get back to you all shortly

never thought about using this method and record it into an action. It's not far off from my manual method, however this might help speed up the things a bit more. Will have to play around with it to see how well will I manage. I'll get back to you if you dont mind if i get stuck thnks

yes I use the same fill color option, then when all that particular color is highlighted i just drag it to a new layer. Unfortunately everytime I tried the collect to new layer it doesnt work since it just make a duplicate of the whole layer into a sub layer (despite only 1 color is selected)

hi all I'm in search of a way (or script) that can seperate each object with the same fill color on its own layer. The aim/scope is so that when I trace an image and limit the amount of colors I would like to have them in seperate layers for later processing in another app. Right now im doing it manually and its ok, but since I have plenty of artworks to do this manner it would help to have some automation/script/easier method of doing it. thnks in advance

I'm using the paintbrush tool but no custom brush, just the default basic line which will look like the pen tool path. I'm using it cause i need to draw the hatching manually and I cant do them with the pen tool.

thanks for the reply I've tried it and indeed you can create afterwards, however the end result is being outline, i wish to have it remain as paths. is it possible?

Hi all as per title, I would like to know if AI has something similar to PS offset. I need to create a seamless hatching (drawn manually). I can easily do this in PS by using the filter, offset tool which will nudge the artwork sideways so that you can match the edges when drawing/filling in the canvas. I know AI has the pattern feature but I can only use once the hatching is done and will overlap (without matching nicely). Any help much appriciated. Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm exporting to PDF high quality preset. I can try to save a comparison and upload here if it helps *edit* adding screen shots as request left side GPU, right CPU as you can see the left side is more pixelated, and in this particular case i'm looking to emulate pencil brush strokes, which for my personal preferences gives a better result.

(I found a similar question in this forum through google but it wont let me view it, probably cause its old since 2015) Hi all, Im working on AI and I'm using a custom made brush that looks like a pencil. Switching between GPU and CPU preview, the looks change. The GPU is more pixelated, and I like the end result more this way, however when I export its coming out like the CPU view version. Is there a way I can export it and make it match the GPU looks & charateristics? I know I can take a screen shot, but that will loose the vector, size, etc (edit) Comparison image attached thanks in advance

havent updated the driver recently so will try nvidia's latest driver, as for that article i will read it and try following it tomorrow, so will keep you updated in the coming days. To eliminate the dual monitor issue I've tried setting the cintiq as the primary and only "monitor" and it still gave the same issue, thought i'm not sure if that counts as a single monitor setup. in any case will try the driver and article suggestions (if any, once read) and will place updates tnks meanwhile any further suggestions still welcome

hi all, (before starting i would like to say that I did search for this error, and there were other posts but I dont think i've seen one which tackles dual monitors issues, so that why i'm re-asking specifically for my situation) I'm getting the error "OpenGL enabled document window error" every time I try to use the rotate tool. What's unusal is that my setup is dual monitors (actually a monitor and a wacom cintiq, which is a display only) When I use it on my normal monitor it works fine, but everytime I either extent my display, clone it, or any form shifting photoshop onto it, i'm getting this error. So basically it works where I dont need it (small monitor) and fails where I need (cintiq) Both monitors are feeding from the same nvidia GTX card, both via DVI. I've tried also HDMI but nothing changed. Shifting ports on graphic card didnt work either. To be honest I didnt put my hopes up much since I think OpenGL works one for the entire card and not per monitor. any help how to set it up properly? photoshop options remains the same, it will just work or not even by just dragging the window from the monitor or cintiq tnks

hi again I've updated to the latest version of AI and included the script in the default folder so it is listed under the script menu, but unfortunately it still didnt work. It is not recorded in the action panel. I've tried a couple of other scripts, and while few of them did get listed, none of them worked as they should (a few stopped half way, or just set there) any other help? 😕

i thought the fix of the restart issue was solved in the 2018 not the script loading itself. if an update will fix it i'll do it right away (i dont usually update with every available update unless i know there's something i would need, like in this case) will let you know tomorrow how it goes, hopefully good

i have a script which is saved on my desktop, which i load via ctrl+f12 (scripts > other scripts) it works fine on its own, but when i start recording an action, and load the script, while it does still work, it will not be listed in the action list. so when i replay the action, the part of the script will never happen since its not recorded *edit, what i want is that it is recorded in the action and playbacks as if the script is run manuall

hi all i'm not familiar with scripts at all and a quick search didnt result much in similar question except one from 8yrs ago which said it cant, but maybe since then there were some changes. is it possible to include a script in the action? i've tried recording an action and loaded the script but didnt show up. i'm afraid it still can't but maybe theres a work around? the script im using basically searches for paths smaller than x length, which takes ages to run for complex images, and i need to do it on way too many images to do one by one, so i was hoping for some automation. cheers

what's designers voodoo? and thats why you're going by elimination cause you dont know why... if you knew why you wouldnt go through all this in the first place and set up proper color profiles, but as OP said "I'm not too familiar with that area".

thats the idea behind it firefox reads color profile, older windows photo viewer doesn't (not sure about win10 ver tho) if you already have a mismatch there in the jpgs, chances are you have different profiles through all the different settings.

cause you can embed color profiles in jpg aswell upon exportation. if all the apps are using the same color profiles settings between each other they should be exported all the same. if they export all the same but the app shows it differently then exported you can deduct which one is off I had an instance where photoshop was showing a drawing in a way but when exported it was coming out a bit darker

i bet PS is the one off. I had a similar issue sometime ago. As said most probably its different color profiles. You can try to find out the culprit in a non scientific way but its not ideal. Start by taking the same image, and export/save it as a jpg from all 3 apps (save them different filenames) then open all 3 jpgs and see if they exported all the same. Ideally you view the jpg in a couple of different viewers. If you're using PC use the default windows viewer and maybe a browser like firefox or chrome. If the 3 jpgs match up between themselves, compare which app loads the original artwork in the same looks as the jpg. The one off would be the one that would need tweaking in settings. Obviously there's a ton of more variables that might be causing the issues. Sometimes even a simple gpu/cpu preview might change the shades a bit. Also cmyk/rgb document settings. In photoshop you can enable the option to prompt you about color profile mismatch, you might want to enable that to see if you're loading an image which is not matching to its settings.
