You have a point. I too am experiencing difficulty finding control surfaces that will work flawlessly with Audition. There is not much information out there. But it does the job for 5.1 mixes across different media; via your standard keyboard and mouse. BCF2000 works with limited functionality with Audition by using the Mackie Control (MC C) emulation. The VPot works for panning on mono, stereo and 5.1 tracks. But controlling the panning on a 5.1 track is only limited to the Angle; the other functions such as Stereo Spread, Radius, Center volume and LFE volume cannot be manipulated from the BCF2000 AFAIK. The faders will control track volume automation alright. It is also possible to change track automation mode via the controller. You have the ability to choose Read, Write, Latch and Off. You cannot choose Touch though, again probably because of differing Mackie Control implementations across different DAWs. A peculiar behavior though, is that after Writing track volume automation; the automation mode of the track will automatically switch to Touch. But the Touch behavior is buggy, unpredictable and not as responsive as you would hope it to be. The faders seem to be fighting your Touch automation attempts. Transport control is good (Play and Stop) so as scrubbing forward and backward. Banking by sets of 8 tracks are also alright as well as banking track to track. Mute and Solo of tracks work, but Record arming is not possible. You do have access to the Track EQ via a specific button, but controlling the EQ parameters are not intuitive and very cumbersome to manipulate. There is an Undo function that works, but Saving from the device is not possible. These are all my experiences from using BCF2000 with Audition. I may be wrong in some aspects, as the Mackie Control Protocol still confuses me. As for your original question, the behavior you are looking for is actually available with Presonus Studio One and their new Faderport 8. You have the ability to Flip the faders to control Track Panning or Track Volume; which I also think is quite intuitive. With the recent updates of Adobe Audition, I'm not sure when but I'm currently using Adobe Audition CC 2017.1.1 Build 10.1.1.11 - I am quite happy to see that PreSonus FaderPort is now part of the list of compatible control surfaces. Yes, go check. So it MAY be possible, that the behavior you are looking for...is just right around the corner.
