good to hear you resolved the situation, williama. some things i came across … creating *.csv file on mac-os (numbers-spreadsheet) … text-encoding should be set to western (mac os roman). also … i needed to remember to close down the spreadsheet … before pulling the data-merge into indesign … else it would try creating pages that didn't exist. i share this info … so it may help others peeking into your post … thanks.

stick with what works. save your database *.numbers file menu/file/export-to-csv during the export process … window appears for advanced options … default text-encoding is unicode-utf8 … change to western-macos-roman save as *.csv file that's all there is to it … you surely don't need "sublime" or whatever it's called.

the following might help others who wish to assist you: state the exact version of indesign state your operating system and the exact version of it when did you last successfully export-to-pdf? have there been any os-updates or program-updates since that time? the last time you successfully exported to pdf … was the *.indd file located on ms-onedrive or locally (on your physical computer)? did you try saving the *.indd file as an *.idml file … and then exporting to *.pdf file? there's alternative offsite storage systems online … have you tried any others? additionally … have you cleared your *.indd program preferences? others on this forum may suggest performing this step. let's continue … try creating new *.indd file, single page, and one small text element … use the following parameters: disable facing page … disable master-text-frame 8.5" x 11" margins and bleeds set at 0.0" highlight your text with mouse-cursor: choose "arial-regular" for font (18pt) … make sure text-frame is slightly larger than your word "hello" choose 100% black color only choose "none" for character styles … and "basic paragraph" for paragraph styles save this new *.indd file to local-drive (on your physical computer). export to pdf … successful? close document and quit program … initiate program and open same local document … export to pdf … successful? now, open local *.indd file and save file to ms-onedrive (off-site storage). export to pdf … successful? close document and quit program … initiate program and open same ms-onedrive document … export to pdf … successful? if successful, try adding more elements that will adequately fit on the single page … save *.indd file to ms-onedrive … export to pdf … successful? if successful, add second page and try same routine … successful? now, include a text-thread from the first page to the second page. yep … by now, you know the routine. if successful in above scenarios … it's time to open your official document. the file is located locally … open the *.indd file and delete all pages, except the first page … delete all text elements from that first page … save *.indd file locally using filename "test01.indd" … export to pdf … successful? close document and quit program … initiate program and open same local document … export to pdf … successful? now, open local "test01.indd" file and save to ms-onedrive (off-site storage) … export to pdf … successful? close document and quit program … initiate program and open same off-site document … export to pdf … successful? best practices: 1.) personally … i'd always work locally … copying file to ms-onedrive only when imperative. if your environment mandates you store files offsite … copy the file locally and export to ms-onedrive at end of file-work or shift-end. 2.) personally … i'd work only with commercial open-type fonts. google-fonts are fun … but pose inherent risks in using them (security risk … unstable … etc.). yes … fonts can be a vector for exploits 'n attacks. 3.) understand your images … only large enough to fit at 100% dimensionally … *.tif or *.png format … cmyk gamut if printing to press. 4.) lots of things can be done, and are done, with indesign … imo, maybe some of those cool features are not robust enough, or particularly suitable, for ms-onedrive activities? well … that's about all i got … peace out.

figure what size you want the circle (eg: 2.1447”) and # of lines (eg: 12). “polaroid-tool": rad: 2.1447”x 2.1447” c-div: 0 r-div: 12 rotate: 9° (optional) create your 12 lines … not necessary to outline-stroke … expand/ungroup if you applied blend. move end of each line to the appropriate points on polaroid-tool tips: might be easier keeping the virgin elements on separate locked layer … so as not to alter. changing line-opacity temporarily might aide in placement. utilizing smart-guides serves for precise positioning. the attached illustration was created in cs6.

I have some nice flowing spreads and then two random pages that stick out as individual pages …" issue: the flow is not continuous when viewing in acrobat … sometime dbl-pg and sometime sngl-pg. this is elementary … i have attached two screen-caps below … to better illustrate. in acrobat … the pdf layout appears different between pg18-19. in indesign … division between chap1+2 appears different. start indesign … open both chap1+2+3 files … toggling “pages-palette” in view for each chap-1 … first-pg starts on right-side … last-page ends on left-side chap-2 … first-pg starts on right-side … last-page ends on right-side chap-3 … first-pg starts on left-side … last-page ends on right-side all other chaps … first-pg starts on left-side … last-page ends on right-side … this is good (according to poster). according to your request … seems to me you’d want the first-page to always appear on left-side in the pages-palette … and last-page to always appears on right-side. the way you have it set up … you are commanding indesign to stop current pagination after pg18 and start new pagination at pg19. you may add blank-page at end of chapter … such as what you correctly set up between chap-4 and chap-5. fwiw … same issue appears with toc-section … you start/stop it obnoxiously … forcing the software to begin/end pagination crudely. original-layout: optimal-layout:

as you quickly found out, masterhalfwit … "image-trace" is simply a tool … albeit, a powerful tool. ever looked at some logo warehouses on the internet? such as those hosting mcdonalds and nationwide-insurance and others? while the logos may/mayn’t be in vector format … open one in illustrator … i’d say roughly 95% lack integrity. one can easily discern practically every logo has been image-traced … with, sometime, hideous results*. even some coat-of-arms and family-crests and other heraldry are plagued by the same refuse. i do agree with your prognosis … in this case, recreating the image is far superior, masterhalfwit. you can retain the font-characters on hidden layer … creating outlines on normal layer when ready for print. if client should change one word or the entire font … having the font on hidden layer allows for quick modification. as for the font emulator on myfonts.com … i’ve used it quite a bit in the past and will continue forward. *as example … d/l the *.svg file at https://worldvectorlogo.com/logo/nationwide … open within illustrator … enlarge the character “n” or character “Ⓡ” … soon become evident.

as monika so graciously pointed out … neon and fluorescent colors usually are created in rgb format. she even gave you pointers to check out youtube as well as written tutorials. the remainder is up to you … the only one who can satisfy is you. start out with simple design and continue toward more complex illustrations.

others will drop by to give their input … meanwhile, a couple questions to help them in their prognosis: ◦ what is your win-10 version? ◦ what is your indd-cc version? ◦ did this issue start happening directly after indd-cc update? ◦ did this issue start happening directly after win-10 update? ◦ do all of your win-10 machines have identical versions? even though you’ve reproduced the problem with multiple win-10 machines … this does not rule out win-10 updates to all machines as a contributing factor. hopefully others will come to your assist … your replies will help.

i understand you replaced win-7 computer with win-10 computer. do you still have the older win-7 computer and just aren't using it anymore? if that’s the case … i’d suggest keeping your old win-7 computer … using it only for adobe-cs4 apps (and other 32bit faves). if you decide to go this route … do not hook up the internet or wi-fi or bluetooth to your old computer … and don’t share any peripheral devices cross-platform (e.g. printers, storage-drives, usb, etc). if you know your way around computers … and the new win-10 computer is at your home … the new win-10 computer can be configured for “dual-boot” … thereby, you’d install win-7os on that new win-10os computer. keep in mind … there’d be several challenges involved. the environment needs to be at your own home … you’d have to find a copy of win-7 to install … network security issues might appear … etc. personally … i wouldn’t bother with dual-boot … just get yourself an old win-7 pc and install adobe-cs4 on it … as iterated above. take note … i am only a member here and my inputs are suggestions only.

i’m noticing a .25pt stroke at the edge of your “blue” background … are you wanting that stroke? you might select the bkgd-element and check your "swatch-palette" … see what color that stroke is set up as. you may have the stroke enabled as "default" … in order to disable that stroke as default … open *.indd program with no document open … then go to swatch-palette and disable stroke … then, close down *.indd program. indesign should now retain your ‘no stroke’ option. keep in mind … i am only a member … my findings/opinions may not be accurate/acceptable.

get yourself a win-7 computer, clement … keep the win-7 computer off the internet/intranet … install indd-cs6 on that win-7 computer … and do your thing. keep in mind … win-7 won’t get any more security updates from microsoft … so, do not connect that win-7 network cable to anything (not even wifi, bluetooth, printer, iot devices, etc). manage files using a common usb device … utilize proper a/v software on all files … scan all files … this way, you don’t drag infections cross-platform. if you're a linux guru … another option would be to get yourself a linux-machine (ubuntu, mint, etc) … install wine … then install indd-cs6 on top of wine. again, take all the necessary precautions as outlined above … keeping in mind, wine may not install indd-cs6 adequately. i am not acp … am simple grunt same as you, clement … therefore, take my advice with a grain of sand. p.s. clement … do yourself a treat … try installing the following fonts on your win-10 machine … then try opening indd-cs6 one more time: arial.ttf micross.ttf tahoma.ttf historically … some adobe products used to shut-down (in the past) … due to certain fonts not being available.

if they are freehand files … and you are desperate to open the files … tensai has a plug-in for converting freehand to illustrator. however … you have catalina (v10.15), which accepts only 64-bit software … so, i doubt their plug-in would work. you'd probably need to use an earlier mac-os … as well as illustrator on that platform. https://www.tensai.co.uk/ai/convert.php https://www.tensai.co.uk/ai/help/FHIUserGuide.php

as you suggested … you may purposely 'contact' the website proprietor … encourage them to start supporting *.pdf format or even *.svg format … however, pdf will be a more likely candidate … as svg favors interactive/ animation elements.

win-10-home (64-bit) 1903.18362.356 adobe-indesign-cs4 (6.0.352) personally, i've never had any issues with regard to adobe software. granted, there's been a couple 'hiccups' within the win-10 environment after one or two major updates … but those never affected adobe. and, as you can see … i work adobe-cs4. it should also be noted … cs4 was installed over win-8.0(oem) framework … so, it was 'grandfathered' into win-10. you did mention a few things, carl … however, trouble-shooting involves more than that. one thing you could try … start up indd from fresh boot … create new document … have only one text element in that new document … type one word (i.e. adobe) … let the cursor float in that text element and minimize the indd program. go about your other tasks for an hour or two … return and see if the cursor is still blinking … if so, try adding text. it is true … ms-updates sometime alter certain configs (hibernate, sleep, screensaver, display, etc.) … each of those may play a part with regard to your issue. you could experiment … changing hibernate/sleep settings … alter display settings … etc. however, if you decide to go this route … i'd advise for you to first create a system-restore point. keep in mind … every ms-update turns off system-restore … they have their reasons for doing so. also, make sure you back up any important business /personal files. afterward, reboot … does the same issue occur? another tactic you might try … create a new account on your computer … access indd on that account … same issue occur? try booting into safe-mode … same issue occur? lastly … you might consider uninstall/reinstall of indd. however … that may very well end up shoveling dirt into the coffin … i'd use this only as a last resort. i understand not everyone has money to throw at new software, carl … 'specially this subscripton based bull-crap. in lieu of that … i may suggest one more alternative. get a second computer … one with earlier win-os. make sure that computer has no virus /malware on it (reformat/reinstall win-os if necessary). then, install adobe-cs6 on that computer. one word of caution: never connect that win-7 computer to the internet … never network that computer to your win-10 computer … if you have a printer attached to the win-10 computer … never attach the win-7 computer to that printer. all this precaution is to keep your environment sterile.

i have no idea what your environment is … or what your expectations are … i ‘surmise’ based on what you state. yes, you uploaded two *.png images … you could have also uploaded the original *.ai images for comparison. some elements in illustrator generate raster images … even in their native state. if your intent is to host the image on a webpage … and you wish to retain certain regions that are ‘transparent’ … you’d save as gif or png or svg. gif and png are rasters(made of pixels) … svg is vector. gif will create an undesirable ‘halo/fringe/alias’ around the transparent areas. transparent png has no halos … and is honored by almost all browsers. svg(intended for one/two dimensional images) is not honored by all browsers. additionally, gif images contain only 256 colors. in illustrator, when exporting from vector to jpg/gif/png/psd/etc … this protocol rasterizes the vector image. a small box appears, asking the dpi/ppi-resolution you want … normal webpage is 72dpi. theoretically, you could save it with higher resolution … but it won’t look any better when displayed on a webpage … also, the higher dpi means add'l bandwidth. if printing … line-art can be rendered to 1200dpi to help retain crispness. what do majority of companies go with … hard to say, really. many webpages with logos are either jpg or png. i prefer transparencies … so i go with png … as, png have many benefits when designing websites. the normal illustrator (artist) creates a ‘safe’ read-only vector … thereby, rendering different options from that … webpage would be png … anything printed would be vector. you always want to save the original vector in a remote location … in case things go awry. once a year open/save that file to a new location. why? magnetic bytes will eventually lose their charge. never use a usb-drive for this … they are not a dependable medium and may fail tomorrow. similarly, never trust an ssd-drive for same reason. your boss pulls you into her office on friday … telling you the company president wants to host a billboard with advertisement. all you gotta’ do is copy/burn that original vector to a cd and give it to the sign-shop to silkscreen. vectors will always retain their sharpness … because they are actually mathematical formulae instead of pixels.

are you sure the files contain the original file-name extension? were the files created in the same version of illustrator you are now using? was the file saved as *.pdf or *.ai or *.eps? if *.eps … try dragging the file to acrobat … it will initiate distiller and will then create a *.pdf. if *.ai … it may open in acrobat … depending how it was saved. if *.pdf … it will open in acrobat. try opening the file in a different version of illustrator. try placing the file inside indesign and creating *.pdf. try changing file-name extension. try rebooting your computer. try using different computer. try using different os (linux, win, mac, etc). try zipping it up … then opening that *.zip file with explorer/finder … then right-click that *.zip file and open using illustrator. search google … and exhaust each and every option that you sniff. download/install "inkscape" … it's a free vector editing software … try opening the file. try uploading the file to online service provider … and see if file opens. ftr … monika is 100% accurate … you are not the only person reading adobe's forums. edit: if you've exhausted all other options … try creating a new illustrator file … save to desktop … copy that file to your usb-drive … then try opening from usb.

obviously, i must be missing the issue … my setup looks fine. the type/special-char/current-page variable resides on the master-pages … designated pg15-20 as separate section … the 'absolute' pg#'s you mention appear as they should (15-20). if my screen-cap is not correct … pls describe why it's wrong. also might be helpful garnering your own screen-cap(s). a second variant would be adding the prefix to the 'absolute' numbering … for that you'd simply tick "include prefix".

mylar … different colors (silver-mylar, etc) … can be printed on … can be tipped-in or tipped-on(peel-off) … versatile in usage. if it's to be applied to a existing page in a book … you'd probably want to use it as tip-on(peel-off, sticker, etc) … peel the backing off and 'paste' it onto the page, endsheet, gatefold, insert, cover or whatever. whereas, tipping-in would coincide during the binding operations of the book. but, yes, that would offer the mirror-effect your student is inquiring about. if propped up … likely, the student could look onto the surface and apply makeup to their face or whatever.
