Im having similar issues. Mine will eventually work, but opening files, even SMALL files like 10kb the application turns white and says (Not Responding) [on windows 10]. Just giving an update to this. After hours of troubleshooting and Adobe support having NO clue why this was occuring. It seems that .svg files made in AI 2017 and earlier are not supported in 2018 for aligning. I had to remake all my SVG's. ... View more

Okay, I completely uninstalled EVERY adobe app, used the cleaner tool, reinstalled Creative Cloud Desktop App, and ONLY Illustrator 2018. It still does not work, but it seems to be only for .SVG files. I took the 2 objects and added them to my Creative Cloud Library, and I can center them there, but it's VERY inconvenient because I change the colors of the letters and the stroke depending upon the flag background, and I would have to use the "edit original" every time.
