I believe this is what you asked for. If you want facing pages, you will need to check "Recto verso"

Have you checked the pagination setup? FrameMaker can display pages like that, without them being single sided.

I know this is NOT what you asked, but I would absolutely consider upgrading to the latest version of FrameMaker.
While it certainly is nice to have found a workflow that works, my experience has been that the downside to this, is that one stops being creative and keeping up with new demands for publishing. Keep up with the times, is my advice 🙂

I am currently importing a lot of graphics on the reference pages of a document. And I need to make these graphics fit to a specific frame, but the feature "Fit to Frame" is greyed out. This has happened to me many times in different document but now I would like to get to the bottom of this mystery. WHY does it only work sometimes? Are there specific circumstances I must adhere to?

I very, very rarely save documents under a new name. Next to never. And books only when I absolutely have to. I never use the undo history.
Regarding InDesigns book file, it has an annoying tendency to insist on updating everything whenever you move files around in the book. And the update process can not be cancelled. While you can export to HTML5 on a per document basis, the book can not be exported to html5. As far as I know, that is.
I believe the publish panel in FrameMaker is actually excellent. One can start multiple publishing process at the same time, like HTML5/Epub and PDF. AND you can save the publish settings into a settings file.
I really wish, though, that somebody would realize that "Print" is ALSO publishing and put a print option into the Publish panel too and remove it entirely from the File Menu.

My main gripe with InDesign is mainly speed and the lack of fast book handling. InDesign is slow when the number of pages rise. And the book feature is a mess. That said, I sure wish FM had some of the good features of InDesign like guidelines, better color management, better font support and better print engine.

I'm always confused with this...
▶ U+25B6 Black Right-pointing Triangle ▸ U+25B8 Black Right-pointing Small Triangle
These will work in Arial. But if you switch to Aptos, which is the default font of Word, you will nothing. I believe Aptos is a unicode font and I would expect it to conform to the standard like Arial. But that does not seem to happen. Why is that?

To understand correctly... The link back to the graphic goes to the title of the graphic and not to the hotspot position where it came from.... right?

Are you adding text in the "File info" section in the FrameMaker documents? I am not sure that is the fix in this instance, but I have often used it to make the documents name work properly in HTML5 exports.

Following the lead of @Winfried Reng here...
Yes, insert a character tag in the cross reference formats in your FM documents. Winfried has created the tag "<$paratext>" in this instance.
E.g.: <html5>“<$paratext>” on page\ <$pagenum><Default ¶ Font>
I the HTML5 editor in FrameMakers publish dialogue, you can now address that unique character tag and give it another color. Using this principle you can customize the entire output of the book and give the HTML5 the look and feel of the printed publication or some other design.

Regarding sending FrameMaker files to other people... I always use Frameexperts "ArchiveES" script. When run, it will create a backup of the entire FrameMaker project along with two neat folders for linked graphics and text insets. The absolute beauty of this approach is that the Framemaker files can opened at the recipient with all links pointing to the two new folders. This is also an excellent method for getting a grip on a project which may have grown a little too many links to all sorts of places.

Thanks for your prompt feedback @Matt-Tech Comm Tools and @Winfried Reng I eventually did manage to strangle the odd font messages by limiting the access to only the right fonts. The other message still pops up once in a while. I suspect it has to do with the files being originally mac files from mid nineties. 🙂

FrameMaker Version: 17.0.6.798
After I have upgraded to the latest FM version I have had font issues. Documents come up with missing fonts in the error log, but in the Fonts Panel everything is good. All fonts are ok and the error log does not detail WHAT fonts are missing.
And now this:
"No openable nongenerated files"... That's just FM files, right? I do have FM files in the book and they can all be opened. I don't get it. Can anyone explain?

I have some clients asking about FrameMaker and S1000D. I am no expert on structured FrameMaker and have done some research into what can be done using FrameMaker as a S1000D editor.
I do worry that all information regarding this subject looks very dated. FrameMaker version 10 and not a lot of consultants...
Does anybody here have up-to-date knowledge about using FrameMaker as a S1000 editor?

You can find the file names and locations by generating a list of references.
In the Book file choose Insert->List of->References
Choos "Imported Graphics"
This will generate a file with the comple URL's of the imported graphics. If you like, you can add other parameters like page number etc.

I am not sure why you can not use the reference pages for the formatting? When you write "chronological order" - do you actually mean sorting by the time the marker has been created or updated? Or do you merely mean a sorting in the order of appearance in the manuscript?

The small example I showed above, is from the reference pages of a List Of (subject) Markers. You can accomplish the desired for formatting by applying character tags to the reference pages. Not in the markers, though - that is true

<Italics> is the name of a character tag/format. Have you tried applying that character tag to something to check whether it actually makes text italic?

For those coming here in the future with the same question, this is what can be done. We found a workaround. In this instance it was "something" in the FrameMaker documents "document properties" that made it crash when XLIFF generation ran. We found a workaround by:
creating a new FrameMaker document
importing all formats, except "document properties" from the troubled document.
manually adding page size and pagination to the new document
Copy pasting the entire text flow from the troubled document into the new document. Essentially we made a new document with only the most basic "document properties". This workaround worked and made it possible to export to XLIFF.

Thank you @frameexpert ! Can't figure it out. Seems like FrameMaker does not delete PDF settings properly from the document when the settings are turned off. Right now, that is the suspect. PDF imposes some sort of structure in connection with the para styles and I suppose that might trigger a crash when XLIFF export picks the document apart and imposes another structure. Merely guesswork, though 🙂

I have been trying to troubleshoot an xliff issue which causes FrameMaker to crash. The issues seems to be related to the part of the template which is "document properties". But I have not been able to find a precise description of what - exactly - settings constitutes a documents properties.

pagination setup,
PDF properties,

File Info
What else is there?
