Hi I will try to explain. Let's start with example. www.mywebsite.com www.mywebsite.com/ www.mywebsite.com/index.html mywebsite.com/ mywebsite.com/index.html In most of the cases, they all lead to the same page, and causes duplication. Though there is no penalty for duplication, just a side effect, Google will slow down the crawling for these page, because Google does not waste server resources on the same content available on the different page. Our motive is to tell crawler, how to crawl my site. There are many methods to solve this (301, noindex, preferred domain etc) but the method which I use is rel=canonical. <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.mysite.com" /> A rel=canonical tells Google that one URL is a duplicate of another. So you can specify which homepage version you want Google and other search engines to ignore. I can provide .htaccess method as well, but in bc, you don't have access to that file, so try the method above and see if you get help.
