Question

An Error Exists on This Page.

I downloaded some large high res PDF image files of ancient documents to my computer. I was able to view them with no problem until all of a sudden they stopped opening properly and an error message now appears whenever I attempt to open one. It reads: "An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem." Obviously this has nothing to do with the creator of the PDF. Other PDF text and image files work fine. I attempted to repair the installation, I uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat, nothing has worked. Please assist. Thank you.

The fact other files (or even other pages in the same file) work fine doesn't mean there can't be a problem in this one... Contact the author of the file and report the problem to them. There's nothing you can do about it yourself with just the free Reader, anyway.

How can the problem be with them when the file worked fine at first?

Without seeing the file it's hard to say for sure...
