Cannot open PDF

We now have adobe acrobat reader DC, we can't get to our pdf's that were created before this newer version was put on our system.  so now we can't update the pdf's that exist.  if we want to do anything we will have to recreate =all of our forms, which is not acceptable.  When we pull up a pdf it is now password protected.  WHY?
