Cannot open pdf

I get a message that Adobe Acrobat Reader could not open xxx.pdf because it is not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged. This is a pdf i exported from a word document. The file will open. If I send it to myself I get the message. Not computer savy here. Need some help. Thanks
