Glitch in the Matrix

I am editing a pdf and a window popped up that said something to the effect of "the application has stopped working" I close out the two files I was working on, and when I reopened them one had a significant amount of the type replaced with Xs in boxes. Is there a way to salvage this, or am I starting over?
