How is the e signature made?

When using adobe acrobat mobile app, you can create a signature and by writing on the screen and then add it to the pdf. What I want to know is how is that made? Does drawing on it produce a picture that is that merged with the pdf? Or is the picture added to the pdf in some special way? Is it a picture at all?
