As stated in the latest post, the PDF I CAN open are those already previously opened and saved to my hard drive.  I have no problems with them.  I can open and close them all day long, no problem.

Where I have my problem is opening a link in an email or a website, e.g. outerzone.co.uk, or nikonusa.com and its manuals.  The PDF does one of three things.

    1.  In the grey screen with the blue progress bar, it says it is loaded, then freezes.  You can't kill it, except by Task Manager.

    2.  The grey screen disappears, and you see the first page, but, in the low left corner, you see that the download is not complete.  It freezes, and you have to kill it with Task Manager.

    3.  It loads all the way, and page one comes up.  There's a small, short menu, bottom center, with the Adobe logo on its right.  Clicking the Adobe logo is supposed to make the Adobe controls visible at the top.  You put your mouse on it, it changes shade, but does nothing.  Again, you have to kill it with Task Manager.

It does this no matter the size, source, or content of the PDF.  So

What is bizarre is that after a reboot, If I'm quick, I can read one or two PDF, then the problems are there, again.  I don't want to have to reboot everytime I want to read a particular type of file.

I am thinking ACRORD32.exe is good.  It's one of the DLL that is corrupt, as it is the DLL Explorer calls when you click a link.  ACRORD32.exe is what you invoke when you read a file saved to your hard drive.  Reloading Reader DC does nothing, as the DLL that comes in is broken.

I'm obviously not the only one, and it involves not only Windows 7, but ALL the versions.  Is there any SERIOUS effort to fix this?

Again, what's a SAFE alternative to Reader DC?

Robert.  I concur.  I am starting to believe this is one of three scenarios.

-"Crippleware".  Make it hard to use, or impossible to use, to encourage users to buy your higher graded product.  Yahoo does this with their email user interface.

-Incompetence.  This one is difficult to believe, as Adobe can afford the finest talent.

-Advanced virus.  There are virii out there the scanners cannot detect.  Does someone have a seething grudge against Adobe?  This kind of attack would REALLY hurt their reputation.

In any case, I am joining the ranks of the disgusted.  Does anyone out there know of a safe site and a safe application to download to read PDF?  I'm ready to walk away from Adobe Reader, never to return.

Concur enthusiastically.  We give them everything they ask for, and they give us bupkis.

I'm going to take a huge chance and go Foxit.  So many of the other options were crippleware; they were a 30-day TRIAL version.  Foxit may do the same.  If it does, I'm sure some entrepreneur will put up a competitor.

A comedian on HBO Comedy Hour was working "the great lies".  A couple of them apply, here.

-Your problem is our number one concern.

-We're working hard to resolve this problem.

    -We'll call you RIGHT back!

    -The customer is number one.

The first of these complaints are dated 2013.  It's 2017.  No solution.  I think it's safe to say they aren't working on one, and don't really care about it.  With the talent available to Adobe, a problem like this would be solved in 72 hours, max.  I'm leaning to the crippleware option.  PDF is important to the legal end of the business community, where money flows in five and six figure gobs.  "Encouraging" purchase of PDF software only makes good business sense.  Betcha Bippy the paid software doesn't have this problem.

Their attitude toward us is probably, "Shut up and buy the @#$#% software."  Whining about it is probably laughed at.  I may respond one more time, but, like you, I am becoming disgusted.
