Scanning a document to a PDF

I'm trying to scan and convert individual documents into a PDF. After I scan the doc and try to save as in the desired file location, my computer freezes up and I get an error message saying "Adobe Pro is not working" and I have to close it down and try unsuccessfully again. What's up and what am I missing?
