working with book-length scanned pdfs

As a professional writer, my research goal remains to translate foreign language books freely available via Google and others.  So, I purchased the Adobe product that purportedly lets me upload a document to the cloud, convert the pdf to word, and then I would be able to copy relevant portions and plug them into a translator.

However, book-length docs crash the system, as others have noted.  So, I need to break the google pdf into digestible bites.  But scanned pdfs to not allow copying. 

So I seem back to square one, having purchased an Adobe product that pormised to do something that it either cannot do or I am too stupid to figure out.

The only support so far from Adobe is to buy Adobe Acrobat.  That was not as advertised.  Adobe Com was supposed to be the solution.
