AE Audio in RAM Preview stopped playing (settings are OK)

I am working on the latest version of AE and am half way through a project, out of the blue, when i went to preview the video, it stopped playing the audio track.

 

Default audio device is OK

Track is NOT muted

Audio playback is ENABLED on the preivew tab

 

It plays a milisecond of the audio every time I hit the preview button and then cuts out. I've tried restarting to no avail.

 

The audio renders fine if I export the project

 

Very difficult to sync the animation to the waveform only, it's doing my head in!

any pointers would be appreciated

Well, after writing this entire post, i went back in to After Effects, tried playing again and it was fine. Maybe I was being impatient on the preview. No idea, could have just been a random AE bug. Still baffled.
