AE Roto Brush Warning

Question

Hey,

Whenever I attempt to use the Roto Brush tool I get the following warning:

AE Warning: Roto Brush strokes cannot be added until the current frame has finished rendering.

I get the warning although no status bar shows anything rendering. I have left it alone for hours. I have tried a couple of different videos and it doesn't matter what file I am using. I have tried purging memory and cache. I have tried freezing and unfreezing.

I am very new to AE so this is no doubt my fault. I appreciate any help.

Using a MacBook Pro 2019 and AE 23.1.0.
