Creating shape from vector layer, but mask does not show from Ai

Ok, so I imported the Ai files, created shape layer from them, and this is happening.  I understand it must have something to do with the way it is masked in the Ai file.  From what I've read, it can be fixed in the group layers but I have no clue how to do that.  I did not create the Ai files, just trying to animate them in AE. Thanks for any help!
