Question

Glitchy ram preview playback in 18.2

I recently developed a problem with my ram previews glitching, I was only putting together a simple slide transition with 4 solid layers and a couple of shape layers, and the glitching was horrendous. I looked at all my preferences and settings, checked video playback in Premiere pro and Media player, which were both OK as a was the PC monitor and everything else I could think of.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both After Effects and my nvidia drivers all to no avail.

This issue was resolved before contacting support by uninstalling version 18.2 and reinstalling version 18.1 and everything seems to preview fine again for now. But I am baffled as to what was causing the issue.

Anbody else had similar problems ?

My specs are:

Windows 10 Home

16Gb Ram

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Super

Nvidia Studio Driver version: 462.59 Release Date: 05/11/2021

Processor AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

These specs are usually, and should never be, a problem for what I was doing and may serve as a heads up for anyone with current similar issues.

Hi Michael,

Sorry for your issue.

Were you getting this issue with a particular media type? Do you have a screenshot of the glitch?

If you plan to install the latest version, try resetting the preferences of After Effects.

Let us know, we're here to help.

Thanks,

Nishu

Hi Nishu,

No I don't have a screen shot, I was one last attempt from taking one when I reinstalled the 18.1 version and that worked so I continued with my project. If I get the time time in the next few day's I will reinstall the 18.2 update and try again knowing I can go back to 18.1 if it's still not right.

For descriptive purposes I can only say imagine the smooth edge of a shape or layer slide transitioning across a composition how it should do smoothly, well there was no recognisably smooth edges on any simple movement of shape or solid it was like glitchy, jagged, zig zag edges almost like an old used vcr tape, and it was not any effect I had added.

I checked out a handful of other recent compositions I had done with moving shapes on and they all looked the same in ram preview.

I rendered a few seconds through AME and it rendered ok, but it was just unusable in ram preview the way it was and it took me several frustrating hours of unsuccessful messing around before deciding to install version 18.1 and working on my comp again.

Regards

Michael

Just a quick update on this, I decided to update to the new 18.4 version of Afer Effects from my 18.1 version and it was glitchy and jagged on the edges of moving shapes and solids when there is any transition or movement as it was on the 18.2 update so I have re-installed 18.1 again where everything works smoothly in RAM preview.

I have the latest Nvidia Studio drivers ver 471.41 and using an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 Super graphics card

System info.

64 bit Windows 10 ver20HT

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor 3.59 GHz

16Gb Ram
