Question

Helicopter Missile Smoke

Hi community,

I'm currently experimenting stuff on a dummy project and I'd like to create a missile firing from a helicopter that explodes near a walking person. At this point, I'm facing difficulties with creating the missile smoke to look the way it should after firing. I watched this video explaining something similar, using trapcode particular and a light object, but I guess it's not exactly working properly in my case, or I'm doing something wrong.

I'm attaching my screen recorded video so you can see how it currently looks. I changed the Trapcode Particular settings just as the guy in the video and used a cloud png image as an emitter layer source. It resembled a smoke texture, but when playing it from the timeline, you see that it starts developing downward, as the starting point moves down too, which is not how it should be. I tried motion tracking the helicopter from the video footage, tie a null object to the tracker and then tie the particular and light object to the null, but nothing changed. Also, the more I move the cursor through the time line, the smoke line keeps moving down, whereas i need it to stop moving down as the missile reaches the ground.

The other question I have is related to the smoke dispersing, as emitted smoke should slightly disperse into the air. Maybe I should change something from the Particular settings for that, but what exactly?

As always, your inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nik

Hey,

Maybe it's a bit late to write again in this thread, but could you give me an andvice how I can convert a mov/mp4 video into an EXR sequence of files? I'd like to add an explosion when the missle hits the ground and want to make the flying of concrete pieces more realistic through some depth compositing.

I've searched online convertors and ways to do it within AE/Premiere, but with no luck.I see that it'spossible to export exr passes from 3d software like Cinema 4D, but theonly way i see to import a video there is by creating a new material and add the video as texture, then add it to a plane object , but it doesn't play.

The only way I found was to export a video file as a png sequence, then convert it via an online converter, but it allows conversion of only 1 file at a time, and there are a lot of them, so it's not worth it.

Spend some time on the Maxon website learning about the new and improved Particular UI and workflow. There are some presets in the Particular Designer UI that you launch from the Particular Effects Control Panel that will get you there. You'll need to shorten the life and increase the dispersion over time. Then you need to work on the emitter.

I don't have time to research specific tutorials, but the one you shared is very old, and the UI has a lot of new controls and some more efficient ways to handle things. It only gives a few of the very basic fundamentals. I would not count on a step-by-step workflow that works very well from that old tutorial.
