HOw to access the "source, masks, effects & masks" Dropdown on a expression Control Layer Control

Question

I have added a "Expressions Control> Layer Control" to a null layer. I use it to point to a noise layer I will be sampling using the sampleImage function.

In that the layer control allows obviously the ability to sellect a layer, it also allows you to use a dropdown that has 3 options, "Source, Masks & Effects & masks". Now I want to use that dropdown box but I cannot get the value from it? Dopse anyone know how to access it. It doesn't seem to use that dropdown from what I can ascertain from my digging and playing.

I am hoping someone with more knowledge can aswer.

BTW i will use it to use pre effects sampleImage or Post effects sample image. Right now I am adding a dropdown menu control. But it just seems stupid seeiming i already have a menu I could use, That is if it can be accessed. Thanks in advance.

No, the layer control does just that. It only grabs the layer and those options merely toggle the processing state of the layer. It's nothing yopu can do anything with outside that. Whatever you have in mind will have to be done the hard way by e.g. toggling options in effects like Channel Combiner or playing with layer visibility in pre-comps.
