Illustrator layers look incomplete after importing into After Effects

I am trying to make a walk cycle animation with a parallax effect. So I imported my layers into After Effects, but they look like this (see photo below). I am a complete beginner, so I'd appreciate any advice and input you can give me. Why do they appear like this? Where's the rest of the image? Should I export them as assets instead?

Thank you in advance 😄

All your artwork have to be on the artboard in AI. Everything which goes beyond will be cutted away in AE, since AE can only "see" what is on the artboard. If you plan to make a parallax, you must ensure what the artwork and artboard are huge enoug so you can safely move the layers in your AE comp.

Since AE can get slow when working with huge vector files, you can also create a normal HD artboard in AI and just shrink everything to have the needed space to the sides. In AE, you can just scale those layers to the intended size. Just make sure continously rasterization is turned on for those layers, so they don't pixelate when scaling is above 100%.

Without any info on the actual AI document we can't tell you much, but there are several known issues on this relating to AI's oversize canvas, AI creating invisible fake artboards and such. So definitely re-check your file in AI and make sure it's actually designed to spec and doesn't contain any of these potentially problematic things. Anything else will require more info.
