masking

Hello everyone,
I will like to create something similar to this with the character coming out of the shape but still masked within it. How do I go about creating this mask type

Layer 1: red sphere on the back
Layer 2: masked character so that it appears that it comes out of the red sphere (this Layer goes above the Layer of the red sphere in the timeline).

It's just an illusion with the character itself eithrr only being masked in the bottom half or having been stitched together from two layers that have an invisible cut somewhere.
