Where would you start if you had a project to deliver in 24hrs and needed to learn how to use the program? I need to make an intro and outro for a podcast like their old intro and outro.

Start with the Learn workspace. It will take about 20 minutes to become familiar with the workspace and the general workflow. Then check the User Guide. That should give you some example projects to look at.

If you are completely lost, and you can, please post a link to the videos you are trying to copy so we have some idea of what you are trying to do.

Use layers. Don't try to do everything on one layer. Unless you are an expert in frame size and frame rates for video, use the Composition Presets. Send your renders to the Adobe Media Encoder and use the H.264 presets that match your distribution channel on the web. If nothing matches, then check the hosting service for their frame size and frame rate recommendations.
