Question

Outline elements by hue differential

I'm trying to create a simple outline effect base on differences in hue.

What I have is a sequence of renders from a 3D programme of a crowd simulation, each character gets a slightly different colour value, and that value is flat across each figure.

I'm able to get pretty close using choker, minimat, vegas or various other effects but the thing I'm struggling with is getting an outline between overlapping characters (from their different colour values). I can only achieve a outline round a whole group - i.e. following the alpha. Unfortunately, from testing, auto-trace doesn't really cut it as wierd things happen with persitant masks when characters cross behind each other.

You can see an example below. To be clear I'm trying to get the outline to follow each individual character in the group.

any suggestions of effects / techniques welcome

Nope. That's not a workable RGB matte/ Cryptomatte. You need to re-render with much more distinct colors. After that it's easy enough to extract channel info using Shift Channels, Channel Combiner and other such effects, but you have to give them something they can work on.

I was hoping for something as simple as a path placed where a threshold of hue value takes placed, but it seems that's not a thing. Got good enough results with 6 duplicates keying a different colour on each, and a more restrained pallette in my matte render (3 was not enough)
