Preview & memory

Previewing is slow when the cache is used. According to the task manager, I am only using 16.1 GB during preview and I have available 24. How can I get AE to use more memory and, therefore, less cache?

Some other info: AE + operating system, etc 'idles' using 14.4 GB. Hardware memory is 32 GB, less 8 reserved for other applications.

Hey, Hello maybe you can clean up your cache it works for me some times go to you after effects and then

file > preferences > general > media disk & cache

and then in the disk cache section look for the button Empty Disk Cache

sometimes work, have a good day

forgot to mention in the same section you can change the size of the cache you want to be available mine is 22gb for example and if you want your after effects use more memory you can change it in the same window but instead of going to media disk & cache you go to

file > preferences > general > memory & performance

and then change it for more ram for after effects an less for other shared applications

Thanks Bethotheboss. I already tried setting RAM reserved for other applications rediculously low at 3 GB. (It's back to 😎 No change.

Without exact system info, details about your project, cache settings, preview settings, hardware acceleration, multiframe rendering and so on we can't really tell you much. Generally, though, none of what you describe sounds anything out of the ordinary. Even under ideal conditions you can never use all your system's memory because the operating system itself won't allow it and there are other factors to consider as well.

Thanks for your response, Mylenium. My concern is with why there is a limit on rendering space in main memory (RAM) when there clearly is space for it to expand. Changes to, for example, cache, resolution and magnification don't effect the limit. Multiframe rendering or not, the limit is still there. It makes no difference to which of several projects I've tried it with; there is always extra RAM available and unused. I'd have thought that disabling the disk cache would force more use of RAM, but didn't. And still the cache is being used when there is RAM available to be used instead, and slowing things down.
