Question

Trouble using time displacement on rotobrush layer.

I've been playing with a shot where the character shifts shape via the time displacement effect. I eventually realized I wanted to remove the background so I used the rotoscope brush to do that. Now the effect on the character is pretty mild compared to before using the rotobrush.

Not sure what I can do to improve? I've posted shots of the time displacement settings as well as the gradient used for the effect.

  1. Trim the clip you want to Rotobrush
  2. Pre-compose moving all attributes
  3. Rotobrush the nested comp (your pre-comp) because you never want to run Rotobrush on a trimmed footage layer
  4. Pre-compose the Rotobrshed layer (the nested comp)
  5. Open the Rotobrush comp and select Composition/PreRender from the menu
  6. Go back to the Main comp and apply Time Displacement

You could also just stay in the Main comp and apply Time Displacement to the Rotobrushed comp, but I almost always recommend pre-rendering a Rotobrushed comp because Rotobrush is a resource hog, tends to cause problems with renders more often than a lot of other AE tools, and bloats the AEP file. If I have spent more than a few minutes running Rotobrush, I always render and replace, then delete the Rotobrush effect from the project.
