Cropping an Image Increases the Image's Size

I just noticed that when I use the internal image editing tools to crop an image, the resulting image is exponentially larger than the original. For example, I have an 87.1 KB image. After cropping it, the image is now a whopping 3.1 MB. Is there a setting that I need to change?
