Question

How do I pause to add annotations during/after an effect when editing?

Suppose I want to zoom in on part of a diagram or screenshot, and then add annotations to the zoomed image. I can get something like the effect I want by adding a "ScaleTo", but if I play it in the timeline and pause after the transformation is complete, the image resets to its initial state (I also don't see a way to control what part of the image we zoom into, but maybe I'm just missing something?).

Is there any way to zoom in on a piece of an image and then either start a new slide with the zoomed version, or be able to see the zoomed version in the timeline so I can add annotations without just guessing about where they need to be?

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Scale To effect can be tricky. You do not mention which version you are using? Personally I would also use separate images for the different zoom part and stagger them on the timeline. Not only will it solve the sync issues, but you'll have better control over the quality of the images. There is also a 'Zoom' object, where you can use an enlarged image instead of the zoomed in part, and which offers you better time control. I suppose the Zoom interaction is not a choice because it just offers free control to the user, no way to have different annotations automatically pop up, unless you go for a different approach: give the user hotspots to click to see the annotations instead of feeding them automatically (I had a long career as teacher and don't like the 'feeding' concept at all).

    ‌My solution:

Preview project and stop it at the point in the zoom at which you want to add the annotations.

Use a screenclip tool to take a copy of what is on the screen, save as photo.

Return to your project, and insert this photo onto the slide with the zoom. Set it to a 30 - 50% alpha so you can line it up and size it to match the objects on the slide.

    Over that, add your annotations.

    Delete or hide the screenclip.

You may have to fiddle a bit to find out exactly when to bring the annotations in (or do some math between the main timeline and the zooming object's effects timeline).

This is a useful trick whenever you need to point exactly to something that will be on the user's screen but can't be seen while developing ( for example, if you need an arrow pointing to the TOC).
