Slide Notes Toggle?

Using CP9 and my client has a PowerPoint that has slide notes which are supplemental material to the main slide informration. I've successfully imported all of the notes to their particular slides. The client wants me to have the notes toggle on/off so people can read the supplemental material. I'm sure there has to be a way, but I'm not sure how.  Any advice for a newcomer to Learning development?

Your quickest option is to convert the Slide Notes to Text To Speech, add a single line with extra text, mark the extra text for TTS and generate the audio. THEN, you can assign the slide notes as CC text, without assigning them as TTS.

You can replace the generated audio with silence in the editor, then reuse that 'audio file' from the library for the rest of the slides without having to generate audio.

The point is, the CC text is dependent on the slide having audio, even if it is total silence.

The next question is: can CC text can be shown or hidden via a button, advanced action, or JavaScript?

(I believe so, but a quick test on the button showed it was not an option.)

This tells you why this 'quick option' may not have all the features and flexibility you are looking for. What we really need is the ability to import PPT text as Captivate Captions, Text, Quiz items, etc.

Hmm.. I never import Powerpoint into Captivate. Many report that Captivate simply converts the PP into SWF format (or something like that) and can only be used as backgrounds. You will need your imported text to be a "stand-alone" object in order to use the Show/Hide function. Is it?

This can be done a couple of ways. I would use  Advanced Actions and "Show/Hide" features. Basically you show the first text, hide it on click, and show then second text. Others may have better suggestions than me.

    Steve,

When I imported the PPT, the slide notes came with it. How can I use what is already there with the "Show/Hide" features? Seems like there should be a way, but I haven't been able to find it.

Slide notes in Captivate will be in the Slide Notes panel. They can be used to be converted to Audio (with TTS) or to Closed Captioning. However Closed Captioning is meant for another goal: as subtitles for slides with audio.

You seem to need something different, extra text that can be made visible. Would the CC work flow suit that? You just need to have an audio clip on the slide to be able to show and time CC. Showing/hiding can be done by toggling the system variable cpCmndCC.

When you say "toggle" do you mean they fade on-and-off in sequence, or something else?

The client wants them to read the main slide content and click a button for the slide notes to display. They would click the button again to turn them off.
