Question

Why won't my video play in my e-learning project?

I am designing my first e-learning project in Captivate 2017. I have imported a video that I originally made using Animaker. It won't play and I cannot figure out why.

The file is an MP4.

I need to narrate over the video, so it's crucial that I can actually play the video before I publish the project.

The preview feature doesn't work either.

I really wouldn't recommend adding the audio to your pre-recorded video in Captivate. Use Adobe Premiere where you actually have the capability to edit and synch audio correctly. You will have play back issues when playing the video if you have any bandwidth issues. etc.

Thanks. My video is actually a series of animations that diagram hockey strategies. I made it in Animaker. So, I went back and just added my narration over the original video in Animaker. I could quickly see that I was going to have serious issues with trying to sync audio to video within Captivate.

Indeed the wisest choice you could make!

Since this is your very first elearning project, there's a lot you won't know about Captivate or about the technical issues that can sometimes (usually) occur when creating web-based training.

What format is the video file?  (Should be MP4)

If it is already MP4, perhaps it needs re-encoding.  (Use the Adobe Media Encoder app that comes with Captivate.)

Then look at how you are testing this project for playback.  If the output is SWF, and you are trying to play it locally, your video file may not be playing due to being blocked by Flash Global Security settings.  If HTML5 output, similar browser security issues can intervene.

So if possible, upload your content to a web server or LMS and test from there.  You may find that it actually DOES work.

    Thanks for your reply.

I re-coded the file using AM Encoder and reloaded it into my project. However, it still won't play.

I don't think the output is SWF. It's an MP4 file that plays w/o issues on my MacBook. The darn thing just won't play in Captivate. Again, I need it to play in Captivate because I still need to add narration.

I'm not even sure where I would go to change the Flash global settings.

Like I said in my previous post, when you are just starting out with Captivate there can be lots of technical issues that can intervene.

You have just revealed that you are on a MAC.  May I ask if you are on High Sierra OS?  If so, were you aware that there is a compatibility issue with High Sierra and Captivate 2017 for which Adobe has released a patch?  If not, that could be causing your issue.  Do a Google search for Captivate 2017 High Sierra patch and see what you find.  There have been lots of threads on this form that had links to download the patch.
