CF8 vs. PHP MySQL vs. Access

OK, I'm not sure what a Flash attack is, but considering everything else on
your list...

Everything you just described plus a lot more for about thirty bucks a year,
unlimited membership for your family. Sometimes it makes more sense to
develop your own, sometimes it doesn't. Our family has been using this
service for several years, and I've never seen a problem. This is a
well-written package, and there aren't many others that I could say this
about. I think that this deal would be hard to beat. Even if you do want to
write your own, it would be worth a couple of months subscription to this
just to see the features that they provide.

If you do decide to write this yourself, consider that PHP and MySQL are a
widely supported combination, and that MySQL is considered much more robust
for multiple users than MS Access, which I would avoid if there are more
than just a few users. Also, hosting a site on ColdFusion generally incurs
more fees. If you're willing to pay, this is probably an easier way to go,
although both require a significant amount of programming skills to do
properly. Be prepared for a LOT of studying if you want to implement all of
these features in a secure site on your own.

As an alternative to writing everything yourself, you could start with
pre-built forum/blogging/calendar modules, and stitch together your own
navigation and CSS to make it look like a single integrated site. Again, PHP
seems to be the king here, as there are hundreds of modules available. Just
Google PHP + whatever feature you are looking for.

focused more on genealogy, but is a good example of what you can build using
this approach.

which language do you know: cfml or php?
which db are you proficient in: mysql or ms access?
that's where YOUR value would be.

for me it is cf + mysql, because that's what I know better than anything
else.
