Foolish Question - is Coldfusion free to use if site hosted on shared hosting provider?

Hi all...

I apologize for the extremely dumb question. I've gotten conflicting advice on this, and I just want a real answer before I start developing a site.

Basically, I'm new to dynamic site design. I've played with a few different languages, and Coldfusion seems by far the easiest for a non-programmer newb like me. However, there's no way I can justify the price tag for a full version of Coldfusion 8. I'm mostly just a hobbiest designer, with a few small paid jobs under my belt.

I've been told that I can use the developer edition of Coldfusion 8 to develop and test a Coldfusion site locally, and then, if I host that site with a commercial hosting company like GoDaddy, I don't need to buy a license for Coldfusion. I just pay the $2/mo GoDaddy charges for Coldfusion support.

I've also been told that would be illegal.

Please, can someone give me a straightforward answer???

Thanks very much... Great resource you have here! If it turns out I CAN use Coldfusion, I'm gonna be spending hours reading through all this I'm sure...

Make sure you don't value support from your host if you decide to go with GoDaddy. The price is cheap because the product is... well... cheap.

That is not really a bash as much as it is a reality check. For some developers it is exactly what they need. For a newbie it might pose some challenges.

Whatever hosting site you go with, ask them what cold fusion functionality they disallow. Preferably before you develop anything that uses said functionality.

Hey, thanks guys... good news indeed... cfml makes a lot more sense to me than the php or .net code.

Just to clarify the GoDaddy prices... the $2 us for coldfusion support is on top of the basic hosting package, which starts around $3.95. So call it around $6/mo for hosting a Coldfusion site. Not bad...

Yes you only pay the hosting fee. This is why the whole php versus coldfusion versus .net is a spurious argument. People will say to you "php is free" well that is true if you are going to have your own SERVER which I don't think many people want. Most people just want a place to host their website. For developing webpages on your local machine coldfusion is FREE. You need to pay for php, coldfusion, .net hosting and the prices are the same for them all. You get a lot more bang for your buck with coldfusion though-think of it like the BMW of webdevelopment.

Wow 2 us dollars sounds very cheap maybe I will have to go and look at godaddy for hosting! I'm paying about 5us. I heard that they do have some restrictions on what tags you can use but that is normally not even an issue for most people unless you are a really advanced developer and there are always work arounds.

So go and spread the news coldfusion is free!!
