Portability among ColdFusion Versions

Hi Everyone,

I know nothing about ColdFusion. Personally I have never used it.

But I have to move/migrate server that has ColdFusion application on it. The current server is running ColdFusion MX.

If I have to upgrade from this version(ColdFusion MX), what version will you recommend so I don't have the compatibility issue for those applications currently running under ColdFusion MX?

Thank you so much for your help.

We use Version 8 here.

If you are going to have to move an existing application, I would deploy it onto the current version, and clean-up any "sloppy coding" at this time.  There might be some to deal with; then again, there might not.

The experience of deploying ColdFusion and of migrating/installing software on it is pretty typical vis-a-vis what you would expect for any well-made application server.

Cold Fusion MX is Version 6.  The current version is Version 8.

Your best choice is version 6.  If you go lower, you may have some code that uses functionality introduced in version 6.  It will crash in lower versions.

If you go higher, you might be ok, but you still have to test.  Cold Fusion seems to get less tolerent of "sloppy" coding with each upgrade.  I hate that.  While I don't support sloppy coding, if it was sloppy, it should not have worked when it was first written.

It should be noted that Adobe no longer supports or sells 6 so if you choose to keep that version you will have to get it second hand.

As was mentioned the current version is 8 and 9 is currently in early beta testing.  And todate, Adobe nee Macromedia nee Allaire's policy has been only to sell and support the current version and one previous version.  I.E.  they currenlty support version 7 and 8.  When 9 is released sometime in the next year, it will be version 8 and 9.
