Question

Should ColdFusion be re-named?

Personally, I've never actually liked the name. I love the language but I feel that the name sounds dated and mis-leading with its markup language status (even though by definition it could still be considered markup).   Also, let's face it. The name ColdFusion sends shudders down the spines of most in the web development world and generally has a bad rep (even though you and I both know this is unfounded most of the time.   I know it might involve a bit of work changing these things for what appears to be no immediate value, but even the best brands get overhauled at some point. Also, it's nothing a good Ctrl + F can't fix in the CF code libraries 🙂  Your thoughts? Has something like this ever been considered or is it totally crazy to even contemplate?   Even if you don't agree with me, for a bit of fun, what would you call it?  Mikey

I think ColdFusion is an awesome name for this technology. It definitely sounds fancier in a meeting full of executives who know nothing about technology to say "That was developed with Cold Fusion", versus something like Pee Aich Pee or DOT NET.

It's already been renamed twice.  It used to be called DB Fusion and then Cold Fusion.  Now it's ColdFusion.

Geez man what more do you want?

Changing a name does not change a reputation. If anything, changing the name would backfire and be perceived as an ill-fated attempt to improve market perception without actually changing the product. I agree that there are things that need to change, but the name does not appear to be one of them, at least in my opinion.

Changing the name will only make acceptance worse. The problem with ColdFusion has nothing to do with the name. It is stuck between two religions -- the M$ affectionados that only accept M$ as gospel, and PHP fanatics that expect the world to be free. IMHO, technology wise, CF blows the doors off both but technology and market dominance rarely go hand-in-hand.
