ADE will not open any ascm files (even sample books): Error getting License. License Server Communication E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_OPEN_ERROR

I have tried re-installing and deleting all ascm files off of my computer (Mac book Air running El Captain) a number of times and I have tried opening a variety of different ascm files from different locations. I switched browsers (Chrome to Safari) to download the installation software. Am at a complete loss.
