Chapter-level Table of Contents?

I have been away from FrameMaker for awhile, but I'm now back, using FM 8.0p277 on Windows. What is the least painful way to add a table of contents within a chapter (individual file in a book)? Is it to use Special > Table of Contents for each chapter and then import that TOC into each chapter? I saw mention of an add-on - Systec Toolbox - somewhere, but I can't find a good URL for it.

The company I'm contracting for is now manually adding cross ref's (title and page no.) in a table. It is so-o-o-o painful. I do like the table, though. Can I safely import the TOC file into a table cell? How would I get the formatting and tab set up - in the TOC file or in the chapter file?

    Not a bad suggestion, Art, except that I am using the client's version of FrameMaker. Perhaps unusual for a freelancer, but I haven't really "set up shop" as independent contractor yet. I am stil trying to adjust to the freelance life after 18 years as a direct employee with a large corporation. My layoff was actually 1.5 years ago, but things have worked such that my software has been provided to this point.

    So... could we get back to whether importing a Frame-generated, chapter-level TOC, and what the pitfalls might be? It is certainly easy enough to generate the TOC and import it into Frame doc. The question is whether there are any pitfalls.

    Gloria,

    The only real pitfall in having a TOC as a text inset is remembering to update it when updating the entire book. Make a check list and stick to it.

    That method would work, but I think Rick Quatro's ChapterTOC

    Framescript is easier and quicker.

    Hi Art,

    Thanks much for the suggestion. Rick's product requires FrameScript, though, and we do not have it (nor $$ to get it).

    That's a bummer. I've had other Frame plug-ins, like the Archiver and Cudspan's PGF Whopper, that run from the Utility menu and don't require FrameScript.

    Or am I misunderstanding something here?

    No, it does require FrameScript.

    But if you're a contractor, it may be worth you while to buy it yourself and deduct it on your taxes. And maybe charge it back to the client. But then it'd be part of _your_ toolkit.

    Thanks, Michael. I know how to find the toolbox on the Web now, but I am not finding exactly what I need. Here is the feature:

    Update Chapter ToC

    Update manually added chapter indexes/contents with a single click.

    I don't know how the chapter contents are manually added - apparently this toolbox cannot help me with that, but can help after I've done it the first time. (Does that make sense?/Is that true?)

    Also, I'm still on FM 8 (client requirement), and Squidds seems to have the toolbox only for 9. :-(

    Thanks again for the info. It will be useful in the future, just not now apparently. (Unless somone can clarify.)
