How do you retain cross-references when upgrading to a newer version of FrameMaker? I upgraded from 7.2 to 8 and all my cross-refs are gone.

    Hello Mrs. Venczel,

upgrading your version of FrameMaker should not affect your cross references. If they work in FM7 documents, they will work in FM8.

But there is one thing to remember: In order to resolve cross references, FM needs to be able to open the file containing the target of the cross references.

If you have, e.g. 2 books having cross-references to each other,
and you just migrate one book to FM8, and the other one remains in FM7.2, this will result in the following:
    1. during resolving cross-references, FM8 encounters a reference to a different file.
    2. As this file is still in FM7 format, it will signal an error, that it can´t open the file (the same kind of error that occurs, when e.g. fonts are missing).

    3. The target file will not be opened, so the cross reference will not be resolved.
=> So although the cross references themselves can potentially migrated, they appear "broken", although they aren´t.

If you migrate all the relevant material from one FM version to another, everything will work well.

    Hope this helps.
    With kind regards,
    Franz.

    Krista,

Do you mean that the cross-references formats in files have changed, or that the actual cross-references are gone?

If the cross-refs themselves are gone... have you opened all the affected files, both source and destination, and saved them as FM 8 format? A cross-ref from a FM8 file to a FM7 file, or vice-versa is unlikely to work.

Kriszta, can you tell use which specific version of FM 8 you are using (the "pxxx" numbers as shown in Help > About).

Second, are these cross-refs within the same chapter, or between multiple chapters in a book?

Also, what exactly is the cross-ref syntax you are using?
