Adobe Illustrator Tools get stuck and freeze my application.

My Illustrator 2024 MAC software tools get stuck on one tool and won't allow me to continue.  
At present it's the "Text" tool...😩
I've read to try the space bar to switch - but it doesn't work.
I restart and still have the problem. Does anyone know a fix?
