Constraining path to shape?

I'm trying to figure out how to hide where my paths run outside of the shape. Specifically the darker lines on the bottom of the pumpkin. I've been messing with clipping masks, but they aren't doing what I'd like them to do. Pathfinder isn't helping either. Is there a solution I'm missing, other than rasterizing and cleaning it up from there?

lavender0lilacs,

You ought to be able to do it in this way:

1) Select the handle (or headphone set) and lock it (in the Layers panel);

2) Select the yellow pumpkin shape and Ctrl/Cmd+C+F+X+F (hold Ctrl/Cmd and press X then F then X then F) to get a copy above everything else;

3) Select everything (Ctrl/Cmd+A), then Ctrl/Cmd+7 to make the Clipping Mask;

4) Unlock the part from 1).

A suggestion:

You may like the appearance if you extend all the darker lines to go past the yellow path and be cut along it.

This will remove the rounded (partial) ends.

Select the lines and cut them.

Select the yellow shape.

Click the rightmost Draw Inside button at the bottom of your toolbar.

Select: Edit > Paste in Place.

Click the leftmost Draw Normal button at the bottom of your toolbar.

You have hidden the ends of the lines (and created a clipping mask).

You can edit the lines by selecting Object > Clipping mask > Edit Contents

Thank you!! I don't know why it didn't occur to me, but I had my layers int he wrong order. I kept trying this with the pumpkin on the bottom.

(And you're right, that is a handle! It's supposed to be a trick-or-treat bucket 🙂

In which way do clipping masks not help?
