Fonts missing after upgrade to new version of Illustrator on Mac

I just updated the operating systems on my old Mac and was forced to update Illustrator. It had been a while and it was a big jump in versions. I have fonts that I have used for decades and they no longer work with this version of Illustrator. The fonts are active in Font Book. They work in Word and Text Edit. When I launch Illustrator they are not available. They do not appear in the font list.

I have tried to move them from the user font folder to the main Library font folder. That did not work.

I tried to add them to the Application Support/Adobe/Font folder and that did not work either.

These are fonts that were created years ago by a friend who has since passed away, I would really love to get them working again.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

They are probably PostScript Type 1 fonts. Those are not supported anymore and there have been warnings inside of files when opening these fonts. You can try out whether you can still install the older version of Illustrator on your computer and then use that until your system no longer supports it and solve the font issue while doing so.

You need to update the fonts.

If they are type 1 fonts, there are tools that exist to convert them to another format like TTF.
