Gradient Help

Hello all.

I'm new to Illustrator. I applied a very simple linear two-color gradient (regular gradient, not mesh) to a shape. Now, every time I create a new shape, it automatically applies the gradient instead of just defaulting to a solid color. Is there any way I can fix this? It's driving me crazy, and seems like such a simple thing, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding any kind of solution. I've tried just deleting/backspacing the gradient from the shape, but it deletes the entire shape. I've been able to get around it by just setting both ends of the gradient to the same color...but that can't be the actual solution. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Just press D.

This will apply the basic black stroke  and white fill.

Next object will then have that

When creating new shapes Illustrator will apply the fill & stroke of the previously selected object to that new object. That can be circumvented by chaging the fill/stroke value in the toolbar before creating another object. The same thing can be done by opening the Swatches palette and selecting a solid fill there. Or you can select another object that doesn't have a gradient fill. Then that fill will be applied to the next new object created. Pressing "I" for the eyedropper is another quickie for copying the fill/stroke from another object.

No problem at all. It takes some time to wrap your head around a new app.

Happy New Year! Stick to it and then at the end of the year you will routinely use this.
