Having a Hard Time Creating a Clipping Mask for a Package Design

I'm trying to create a clipping mask, but when I do, the work disappears and I'm left with an invisible rectangular outline. I tried creating a "Compound Path", and also tried Pathfinder "Unite" but it distorts the outlines. Any help would be appreciated.

To make your artwork into a closed path, you could try the shapebuilder tool.

Most probably you need the inework as well, so make a copy first.
