how to group objects that are not separated by layers in order

Hi! I found this file and I wanted to be able to export some of the elements like the DNA strand but this is something that is formed with hundreds of little pieces and I can't use any of the selections options like same blend, appereance or any of that becuase it get other stuff and there are obejects below the one I want. Any ideas?

Select a bunch of of those traced paint daubs, then use the Select Similar/ Select Same in the Object menu based on appearance. Otherwise such scenarios are best solved by using a reverse workflow - deleting the unwanted parts and then re-organising what's left over.
