How to recover crashed .ai file?

Question

My ai file got damaged. I put my laptop on sleep mode and took some time off. When I came back, it automatically started system update. After system update, when I opened my file. It was not editable anymore. It was converted to pdf file (it appears like ai file in my folder but when I open it in illustrator it opens like pdf and my work appears like pictures and it is not editable anymore. This was my hard work was working on it from the last 15 days. Do you have any idea how can I recover it ??
