I was working on a project using Ai on my macbook and I have to leave the house for a while. When I came back from my errands and try to go back and work on it Ai has automatically shut down. When I tried to reopen it, it shows that it is on the recently open files but when I tried clicking it an error dialogue box keep showing saying they can't find the file. When I check my hard drive the file is completely gone and nowhere to find. What should I do, I really need to recover the files. Help!

So when you search for the name of the file, it's gone? Where did you save it?

Is "Save in background" on or off in the preferences? It should be off.

This won't help you recover your file from your external disk, but you might want to run Disk Utility > First Aid on it to see if it's okay.

Had you saved the file before you left the house? If so, please do check the save location. OR, you can do a full search (not a Spotlight search) - so command+F from the Finder. Look for files with .ai - this'll start the machine searching so be patient if you have a lot of .ai files, then hit the little plus sign on the top right of the search window (under the line where you entered the .ai) and change "Kind" to "Created" and enter today's date.

If it's not there, you never saved, and unfortunately what @Mylenium says is true. And it's a hard-learned lesson to always SAVE.

Bad news: There's nothing there. Simply start over.
