im in need of some photoshop specific tools that i need to have in illustrator. things like levels and GCR curves. i work in pre-press so having ultimate control over everything digitally is pretty important to me. Gray Component Replacement in particular is something im very keen on having access to in illustrator. does anyone out there know of a way for me to get these tools in illustrator?

The third party plugin Phantasm by Astute Graphics has some controls, but not GCR.

Maybe you can explain in detail what needs to be done to what kind of object.

right now i am having an issue where im trying to print off PMS Cool Gray 4C. starting with the color mix in my PANTONE book, i make lots of small variations to that color mix and print off a swatch sample that i can hopefully find an exact match for the color i need. in this case, everything is coming out blue. blue like there isnt a single gray swatch on the print, its almost as if it took all the black ink out and changed it all to cyan.

right now im fiddling with the GCR on our rip computer and seeing how that goes, but id rather have access to that in illustrator so when i embed the profile i dont have to change these settings in the rip.

another use for GCR for me is when im making these swatch samples, i can often take a shortcut to getting varied swatches by changing from CMYK to LAB or HSB when mixing the colors. with gray however, when i do this it takes out all the black from my color mix and replaces it with a CMY gray. my thought is that if i could control the GCR in illustrator, that could open up me being able to change a gray to HSB or LAB, make a small adjustment, and then change it back to CMYK without completely throwing off the color balance

What kind of large format printer are you using? The problem you described reminds me of one reason I was so happy when we replaced a thermal inkjet printer we had with a latex-based printer (and different RIP application). Printing gray with the thermal inkjet printer was an absolute pain. There would always be some color cast added, shifting the gray to green-ish looking, blue or even red. Sometimes the color would shift on the same print; pull one end of the print over to the other end and the gray wouldn't match. Fiddling around with the colors in Illustrator or Photoshop didn't help much. Thermal inkjet printing was already a pain. The prints had to out-gas for so long before they could be laminated. We had to watch-dog artwork going into it, like if someone set a "rich black" at 100% of all four ink colors. Ink would literally be dripping down the print. We don't have those issues with latex printing.
