PLACE PDF no longer works

I have been doing this successfully for years. When a client sends a pdf and I need to resize without having the fonts, I could always PLACE in an illustrator doc and flatten transparency to allow me to do some minimal tweeking. Now, the PLACE ask for missing fonts. HELP!
