separating complex free form shape into two or more individual shapes -- what's the secret?

hello, i am newish so forgive me if this is a simplistic problem -- what is the best method for seprating a shape into two or more individual shapes -- see screenshot below for example.

One the Live paint group is expanded and ungrouped, you can move the shapes freely.

thanks tom, i like that idea a lot, but it looks to me like live paint precludes slicing and cutting etc. so maybe it doesn't quite get me to the goal of two independent free form shapes.

Your example would give 2 separate shapes if filled with 2 different colors in LivePaint mode.
